After three nights of my 2-year-old daughter Zen waking up in the middle of the night wanting to get out of bed - or wanting to nurse all night long, I knew something was going on, but I wasn’t sure what. I thought it was probably teething, since we had been through a stretch like this about a month ago and two big molars popped out. It wasn’t until the fourth night of no-sleep that my little one woke with a fever saying “owweee….owweee” complaining that her ear hurt. (read more)

Top 10 Surprising Things I've Done While Breastfeeding
by Alison Jolicoeur
October 26, 2011
To all the new mothers just starting on the magnificent journey of motherhood, breastfeeding is both challenging and joyous. It didn’t come naturally to me and my daughter, as I thought it would, and I swore if we succeeded, I’d be in it for the long haul. She will be 2 in January, which I really do find hard to believe, and nursing a toddler is quite a different experience than nursing an infant. (read more)
As summer winds down and the nights grow colder here in the Northeast, it's time to start switching out the summer clothes in the drawers for long sleeved shirts and footsie pajamas. I've also been wanting to get a new sleep sack for my little one, but haven't been able to find a large at the local store. I'm reluctant to pay shipping charges, and I'm wary of all those fire-retardant chemicals anyway. I thought, how hard can it be to make my own? Turns out, it's really not hard at all! If you have basic sewing skills you can make a sleep sac in a couple hours! I've outlined the simple steps below. (read more)

It is that time again in the Northeast, when we spread our seeds, planting the fruits of this year’s garden. If you have even the smallest bit of arable space, now’s the time to use it as skyrocketing prices for staple items such as corn, wheat and soybeans have caused global food prices to rise 36% just in the past year. Contributing to the rising cost of food is the recent increase in oil prices to over $100 a barrel, putting the squeeze on people across the nation. (read more)
According to a recent study published in Neurogastroenterology & Motility, the presence of bacteria in the gut plays a significant role in the early brain development of mice. Although the authors say it’s too soon to make the same claim for the human brain, there is a lot we can we learn from this study.
Germ-free mice exhibited more “risky” behavior than mice with normal gut bacteria. Gene profiling revealing areas of the brain most affected by the lack of gut bacteria were those of learning, motor skills, and memory. (read more)

Earth Day is a time to celebrate planet earth, our only home. However, the earth has endured much abuse this past year, suffering from two major environmental catastrophes, the BP oil spill and the crisis at Fukushima, the latter of which is still out of control despite attempts to downplay the severity of the situation in the mainstream media.
As a mother, I am deeply saddened by these events and I’m left wondering what kind of world we will be leaving to our children. It can be overwhelming when one begins to realize just how toxic our world has become, (read more)
Although water covers 70% of the earth, fresh, clean, drinkable water, is another story. Yes, water has presented a dilemma to me for a long time. After a decade of living in New York City, trying to avoid the chlorine and fluoride flowing from my tap, I got accustomed to drinking bottled water.
There are many reasons for not wanting to rely on bottled water, beyond the money it takes out of my pocket. When one takes into account the bigger picture, it’s not hard to see that there are even greater costs. (read more)

Last Saturday morning, I made my bi-monthly trek 40 minutes north to the drop-off site for the raw milk buyers’ club, of which I am a member. As I was waiting for the delivery, I was talking with another member about the lengths we have to go these days in order to obtain fresh unadulterated food. In fact, there is a huge movement going on in this country right now to secure our access to, and what some would call our God-given right to pure food. (read more)

In the mainstream, fluoride has been touted as a cavity fighter, but those in the natural health world have long argued its toxic effects. Last month, for the first time in 50 years, government officials recommended the amount of flouride in municipal water supplies be lowered from 1.2 milligrams per liter to 0.7 milligrams per liter, citing recent studies that children are exposed to too much flouride, and that two out of five children have spots on their teeth due to dental flourosis.(read more)
IRS : Breastfeeding Not Medical Care and A Call to Action
by Alison Jolicoeur
January 29, 2011
It has been argued that breastfeeding not only provides food, but also baby's first immunization. By passing antibodies from mother to baby, it is a way to help prevent disease. In fact, a study released by Harvard last year concluded that if mothers followed recommendations to breastfeed exclusively for six months the US could prevent the death of 900 infants a year and save $13 billion dollars in health care costs. Here is the statement I received from Venture Porducts in response to my inquiry about the presence of formamide in their Best Step foam mats:
There are many open questions related to the presence of formamide residue in certain products. Formamides are used as part of the foam manufacturing process. As a result, some level of formamides may be present in many foam-based consumer items, from floor mats, to flip-flops and the soles of your sneakers.(read more)

This past December, Belgium, followed by France, banned the sale of all foam puzzle mats due to the presence of a toxic chemical, formamide. For me this was extremely troublesome, considering I covered a large section of my floor with these mats. They are quite useful in preventing many clunks to the head of my little one, but I am concerned now about the potential toxicity and angry that the issue hasn't gained any attention in the US. For the many people who enjoy local, organic food, or fresh raw milk and eggs from their neighbor, it is hard to understand how th FDA will make their food safer. With the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act (bill S510 HR2751) the FDA's regulatory power over the food supply has greatly increased, apparantly to prevent food borne illnesses. The bill was slipped into a late night Senate session on Sunday, catching many in opposition off guard. The House voted today in favor of the bill 215-144 and President Obama is expected to sign it into law before Christmas. It all appears very well intentioned, but remember the motto "The best government is that which governs the least." (read more)
The Midwifery Modernization Act passed over the summer, an enormous victory for midwives throughout New York state. Previously midwives were required to obtain a written practice agreement (WPA) from an obstetrician in order to legally practice. Under the new law, midwives are able to practice independently and no longer need a WPA.

Twelve days before my due date, I went to bed on New Year’s Eve thinking I had made it through the full moon. It is said that the full moon can bring on labor in the pregnant woman as the moon’s gravitational pull effects the water in the womb just as it effects the oceans. I slept soundly believing I had another couple weeks to prepare for my new arrival. However, early the next morning my eyes popped open as I felt my water break. I had not escaped the power of the lunar cycle. (read more)
I have a passion for good food, and I suspect many of you share this affinity. Not only do I love the ways in which food stimulates the senses, but I also believe that certain foods have amazing nourishing and healing properties. As Hippocrates stated, “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.” It is for this reason that I find our current food situation in the world so troubling. It is my hope, in this article, to inform you of new processes involving pasteurization, irradiation, and genetic engineering, and how these processes may affect your health and the health of the planet.
